New Front Garden Rules
Image break using Interlay logo 11/09/2008

Origianlly part of the Government's water strategy launched in February, new panning rules will take place on October 1st 2008. This is aimed to encourage homeowners to use permeable paving, rain gardens and similar sustainable methods when installing new or replacing existing  paving in front gardens.

However homeowners will no longer be allowed to pave their front gardens without planning permission (which can be obtained from a local council) unless permeable surfaces such as concrete block permeable paving is used or water is otherwise able to soak in the ground. E.g: using Rain gardens. If this is not an option then permission will be required for hard surfaces over 5m2 which will involve scale drawings, application forms, a fee of £150 and about 8 weeks for a decision. But there is a risk that planning permission may not be granted after the 8 week wait.

This is to reduce the increase of flooding, pollution of watercourse and to help move towards sustainable drainage systems. For more information on this and to find out about contractor courses please check out the links below.

Reducing Flood Risks

Image break using Interlay logo 01 / Feb / 2006

As many of you who listen to Jeremy Vine on Radio 2 or watch breakfast television may have noticed recently, paving over front gardens is big news. There is serious concern being voiced by the Royal Horticultural Society that too much paving could be affecting the water run-off from towns and this creates flooding during heavy rain and droughts during dry summers, as the water cannot make it way into natural water courses underground, and from there to our reservoirs. Permeable paving helps to reduce the risks of this and is an important part of what is known as 'Sustainable Drainage Systems', or 'SUDS'. The Government is well aware of the problems that this can cause, particularly in new developments, and is proposing to limit the run-off from new developments in it's proposed 'Code for Sustainable Homes' due out later this year.
