// Interlay Home / March 2010 Job of the Month Winner - Masterlay Groundworks

Our Congratulations go out to everyone working at Masterlay Groundworks for their lovely work at this Synagogue in Maida Vale.

The works were carried out over a period of 4 weeks. The design and planning were created by two local architects, who are members of the establishment. The specification was high, as a board member of the synagogue was personally financing the project. The synagogue itself is a very secure area, constantly monitored and used by large numbers of people, so health and safety and an awareness of dangers and the public were paramount.

The project was 250m of 50mm sawn and honed sandstone with 100x100 sawn and honed sandstone setts. The area was excavated to a formation depth of 300-320mm.

Duct's were installed to take all the necessary electrical cables for up lighting and gate electrics at the point of dealing with a gas pipe, which had come loose from its connection. Irrigation was also installed to feed water into the designated areas. A 100mm layer of type 1 was laid on a membrane and compacted. A 100mm layer of re-enforced ready mix concrete was laid and tamped to the correct levels and falls. Slabs were laid using manual vacuum lifters onto a bed of 50-60mm concrete screed. Setts were laid in a circular pattern around the existing tree on the same bedding. Setts were also used around the edges of the paving works and tree beds for extra detail.

2000 bricks were laid with an internal and external water proof barrier and french drain surround. Bricks were 'London Stock' and finished with weathered pointing.

Director of Masterlay Groundworks, Rob Nash, had this to say about the project:
This was an interesting job, with some challenges along the way, but the end result was a good finish which complemented the building. The board members and the financier of the works were extremely pleased with the end product.
