New rules for paving around the home
Is your Drive Legal?
Changes to planning law for England aim to curb the paving-over offront gardens with impermeable
surfaces to make drives and car parkingareas. Similar measures also now apply in Scotland. When it
comes to selling your home, the buyer’ssolicitor will want to make sure that you have met these rules,
otherwise this could be a problem for the buyer in future.
Interpave has published a new version of its popular guide:‘Paving for Rain: responsible rainwater
management around the home – guidance for householders’.
The first part of the guide explains the rules and how you can make themost of concrete block and flag
paving around your home to satisfy them, and still create a beautiful garden using the latest permeable
paving products and other techniques. Then, the second part of the guide gives straight forward design
and construction
guidance for home-owners, designers and contractors.
This document, and many more, can be downloaded for free from the Interpave website.
Just click here or on the image for a short cut to this document.
Why not share the information with your friends and neighbours to ensure that everyone has been made aware of these regulations.
If you would like any advice, please contact the Interlay office.

Thinking about making changes to your property? Got a paving installer in mind? Don't make the mistake of not checking their credentials first...
Interlay is the only independent association of paving contractors dedicated to promoting and maintaining the
highest professional standards.
When you're considering the transformation of your driveway or patio, be sure to do some research before
signing on the dotted line.
Too many people all over the country are being misled by contractors who make promises but then fail to deliver them. Our advice to you is to check their credentials (i.e. membership to authentic regulatory bodies, such as
Interlay, Checkatrade, etc) and if in doubt, contact those organisations for further information.
A member of Interlay will be able to provide you with their up-to-date Membership Certificate and examples of
their previous works. Individual companies may even provide details of addresses they have worked on so you
can see the finished job first hand.
In accordance with the Interlay Code of Practice, our Members will supply you with a fully itemised written quote
and a contract. These pieces of documentation will provide support to both you and the contractor should an
issue arise.
Why not take a look around our site to find out more. We have a section of Frequently Asked Questions and a
page of Useful Links. If you just need help with finding a reputatable paving installer then why not check out our Members List and the Find a Layer search facility?

A reminder - Interlay are a Trade Association established for the benefit of members and the public. We do
not quote for work directly and have no members called 'Interlay'. If someone calls saying they are from Interlay
and want to quote for your drive, they are not part of Interlay and have no association with us.
